Police are investigating a shooting in Cathedral City Saturday night that left a man dead and a woman critically injured.

Residents of the area told KESQ that they heard about 15 gunshots just before 9 p.m.  Shortly after, two victims were discovered near Tortuga Road and Avenida La Vista, according to Cathedral City police.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. KESQ reports that the woman, who was pregnant, was shot in the stomach and lost her unborn baby.  The man who died at the scene was the father of her child.

The shooting occurred two blocks south of Candy Cane Lane on Minerva Road.  Family and friends say that the woman was visiting Candy Cane Lane prior to the shooting.

UPDATE: KMIR identifies the male victim as 38-year-old David Chavez.

The Desert Sun reports that three children — ages 5, 5, and 12 — were inside the victims’ vehicle. The car was hit by gunfire, but none of the children were injured.

The shooter fled on foot and is described as a Hispanic man in his 30s, bald with a mustache and goatee, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 200 pounds. He wore a gray shirt and blue denim shorts.

The suspects vehicle was a dark, two-door late-90s SUV similar to a Chevrolet Blazer or GMC Jimmy.

Investigators believe that at least two other people were inside the shooter’s vehicle and are encouraging them to come forward.
