A toddler was rescued after he was found wandering around a San Bernardino freeway Saturday morning.
“I saw him and I thought, ‘Oh no, baby, please don’t. Stop, baby,’” Juan Jose Panameno Castro who was driving on the freeway with his son when they saw the child, told the Sun.
The boy was quickly rescued by a former cop.
“At about 9:11 a.m., we were notified that CHP had received a phone call from a gentleman identifying himself as a retired Los Angeles police officer. He’d advised he was out in the eastbound 210 Freeway with a toddler…,” Vicki Cervantes of San Bernardino Police said to ABC 7.
The 3-year-old, who is known as “Johnny”, had left his house and ended up walking on the 210 Freeway before he was rescued by the former cop, who was not named. The child’s family had reported him missing 45 minutes earlier.
The parents are not facing and charges for the incident, as it appears the boy wandered off on his own. Everyone is just happy he is safe.
“He stopped abruptly, jumped out of his vehicle and was able to grab the little guy and take him to safety. He also reported several cars appeared to have swerved around to actually avoid hitting the child, prior to him grabbing a hold of the child. So this could have really had a disastrous ending, and I’m just very grateful it did not,” Cervantes said.
“I can’t thank you enough,” the boys mother said while shaking hands and hugging the retired officer, according to the Sun.
The child was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but was in good spirits.
