Two arrested with handgun and hammer in Date Fest parking lot

Two men were arrested Monday night in the parking lot of the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival after police stepped up patrols after a several recent vehicle burglaries.

Officers patrolled the parking lot in both marked and unmarked patrol vehicles in an effort to catch the suspects in the recent robberies.

At about 9:45 pm, officers noticed two suspicious subjects near parked vehicles. As officers approached the subjects, one subject handed the other subject a firearm and a small hammer, according to police.

The subject with the items fled on foot and was he was detained after a foot pursuit. Police recovered a loaded handgun and a small hammer used to break vehicle windows.

Mario Perez, 18, and Richard Campos, 21, both of Indio, were booked on felony charges.
