In a release to KMIR, Cathedral City Police detailed how the puppy was found:

On August 28th, 2014, at about 1130 hrs, CCPD Officers responded to the 68100 block of Estio Road, Cathedral City, regarding information that was received about a stolen dog from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

Officers went to the residence and knocked on the front door. As contact was made with the occupants inside, a pit bull dog, who matched the description of “Bunny,” was seen inside. The occupants of the residence were detained pending the subsequent theft investigation.

Staff members from the Palm Springs Animal Shelter were contacted who responded with a Micro Chip reader to confirm the dog was in fact “Bunny.” After staff arrived, the dog was scanned and confirmed to be “Bunny.”

Richard Lee Whitehead, 49 years old, resident of Cathedral City was taken into custody for possession of the stolen dog and an outstanding warrant. He was later transported to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, Ca.

“Bunny” was returned to Palm Springs Animal Shelter and appeared to be happy and healthy.
