16 cited, 2 arrested at Coachella checkpoint

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has released the activity for a DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint held at Grapefruit Blvd and Mitchel Drive in the city of Coachella Friday night.

According to the department, the checkpoint resulted in:

  • 862 vehicles screened
  • 11 citations issued for unlicensed/suspended drivers
  • 5 citations issued for other vehicle code violations
  • 1 warrant arrest
  • 1 DUI arrest

DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, according to officials. Officers look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers also checking drivers for proper licensing.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.
