Welcome to 5 Things to Know – a daily rundown of things you might want to be aware of if you live in, visit, or just like being aware about what’s going on in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. As always, thank you for your continued support of Cactus Hugs.

More:
- Every county in Southern California is now in the purple tier.
- An expanded mask order announced by the state on Monday means Californians must wear a face covering while outside their home unless they: are alone in a car or only with those in their household; working in an office or room by themself; outdoors and staying at least six feet away from others not in their household; are obtaining a service involving their nose or face (dentist); or are actively eating or drinking, so long as they maintain physical distance.
- Nationally, things just continue to be not good at all:
NEW: @CBSNews has obtained several state reports by the WH Coronavirus Task Force, which warn:
"There is now aggressive, unrelenting, expanding broad community spread across the country, reaching most counties, without evidence of improvement but rather, further deterioration." pic.twitter.com/xLfT8psR8N

Be safe. Wear a mask.
2) The Desert’s PGA golf tournament will not have fans present in 2021
In an announcement that really shouldn’t surprise anyone, the January PGA golf tournament that you still call the Bob Hope, but is currently known as the American Express, won’t have spectators this year.
“The health and safety of the La Quinta and Coachella Valley communities, as well as our players, volunteers and all other partners, has remained of utmost importance throughout the pandemic,” Jeff Sanders, executive director of the tournament and president of Sportfive Golf Events, the tournament’s management company, said in a statement.
As is the case with each local event that is forced to cancel or adjust to the new normal, it’s not unexpected, but still sucks.
3) You can go skiing or boarding this week!
There is snow in them thar hills…and that means Bear Mountain and Snow Summit will open for the 20/21 Winter season on Friday for the general public and Wednesday for those who hold season passes.
Big Bear received a pretty big early snowfall this year (12″ – 18″) and the resorts have been making snow as well.
You can get more info here.
4) Palm Springs PD recover stolen car and dirt bike, arrest two
Two suspects were taken into custody within 15 minutes of each other early Tuesday morning after Palm Springs police recovered a stolen trailer, dirt bike and car in a pair of unrelated incidents.

5) Gift Guide: Day 2
What the?? It’s already time to start shopping for the holidays!…even though it was 90 freakin’ degrees today in the Coachella Valley! 2020 is quite a year. Over the next couple of weeks, Cactus Hugs will feature a few items you might want to pick up for yourself or as a gift for a loved one. Some items will include affiliate links, which would mean that Cactus Hugs gets a small commission if you happen to buy something, but the price is still the same.
So, yeah…most of us are spending a lot more time at home these days and, while baking sourdough might have been fun early on, about this time you might be more interested in letting someone else do the work, while you sit back and enjoy something tasty.
And while you can (and should!) grab takeout from your favorite local eateries, you can also try out some cool offerings from mom and pops around the country without ever leaving your home thanks to Goldbelly.
The website has curated tasty grub like Chicago pizza, Texas BBQ, New York, bagels and cream cheese from New York and a ton more.
Just find something that those foodies in your life would enjoy and Goldbelly will ship it right to their house (it’s a long distance, so it will likely be frozen and need to be prepared) – or you can even order a little something for yourself, like I think I am going to do, as I have always wanted to try these famous sandwiches out of Pittsburgh.
Stay safe. Stay smart. Practice Social Distancing. Wear a mask.
Have a nice weekend.
