An 85-year-old Sun City man was hospitalized with serious injuries after police say he drove almost 15 miles the wrong way on the 10 Freeway Monday.
Thomas Kacsandy entered the eastbound lanes of the freeway at Main Street in Cabazon, then drove west along the center divider at speeds of more than 90 mph in his 2015 Nissan Versa, according to the Press Enterprise. Police responded quickly to the situation.
“We had multiple units in the area and we ran three different traffic breaks in an attempt to protect the safety of the motoring public and stop the driver,” CHP Officer Darren Meyer said. “On all three occasions, eastbound traffic was brought to a stop and the CHP officers, with lights and sirens on, tried to signal the driver and the driver just kept going.”
While officers were trying to determine where the safest location to place a spike strip would be, Kacsandy crashed into the center divider near Calimesa near the Cherry Valley Boulevard offramp and overturned his car.
He was hospitalized with serious injuries.
