Coachella Fest goers in 2015 were treated to some pretty gigantic art pieces. Now, one of those huge pieces has landed in Joshua Tree.
The “Party God”, a 98,000 pound statue of a party cat wearing sunglasses made from Portuguese marble, was placed on the 10-acre vacant lot in north Joshua Tree owned by Niki and Simon Haas – the artists who were commissioned to create the statue for Coachella Fest.
Niki Haas told Z107.7 FM that the piece took quite a bit of work, “It took a team of 20 people working on it pretty much 18-hour days, for two-and-a-half months.”
The statue was then shipped from Portugal to the United States in three separate shipping containers, before being driven to The Coachella Valley by three semi-trucks from New York to California.
So why Joshua Tree? The brothers told Z107.7 that they didn’t want to haul the statue back to their home in Los Angeles and they thought the statue would be a great fit in Joshua Tree.
And, just for old times’ sake, here is the statue at Coachella:
