Spend any time driving in The Coachella and you immediately realize that not all elderly drivers should be on the road. But, despite all of the damaged storefronts, no one has really seemed to do anything about it…until now.
To find out which elderly drivers are safe to be on the roads and which ones are not, U.C. San Diego researchers will be looking at the driving patterns of a group of 500 San Diego drivers between 65 and 79 years old. The study will not only look at their driving skills, but also at the medications they are taking.
“This isn’t about aging, this is about the medical conditions that unfortunately are more common in older adults,” Dr. Linda Hill told FOX 5 San Diego.
The data will be collected over 4 years and will eventually be used to help elderly drivers and their families make the decision on when someone is not safe to be behind the wheel any longer.
