3,000 people in Desert Hot Springs and Cathedral City lost power for between 20 and 90 minutes after a party balloon hit a power line.

As KMIR reports, this is not an uncommon occurrence:
The grid is connected between two cities so when a balloon touched the lines in Desert Hot Springs it triggered the outage in Cathedral City.
The metallic party balloons are very conductive, so they need to be weighted down.
In fact, SCE had more than 600 balloon-caused outages last year.
So next time you see a happy kid with a new balloon, be a hero and pop that damn thing immediately – and save us all from time without our air conditioning units and televisions.
