‘Tis the Season to be Jolly…but, it is also the season for assholes to steal your Amazon packages from your doorstep. But not for some Corona residents – who decided to fight back against thieves by leaving bait boxes out, filled with poop.
“They’re calling it a movement,” Michaela Roekle told the Press Enterprise.
Roekle, along with other members of the “What’s Up Corona” Facebook group, have been leaving out prop packages, complete with fake address labels, that have quite the shitty surprise inside for would-be package pilferers. Roekle’s “gift” was compliments of her Labrador retriever and 2-year-old son.
And Roekle is going all out on this, even going so far as to bubble wrap the “present”.
“So when they shake it, you can’t hear that there is anything on the inside,” Roekle told CBS. “And we’ve printed out fake labels that look like they’re from the Navy. We’ve Googled to make sure we get legit labels, too.”
Roekle posted the idea to combat thieves on Facebook after the second round of mail thefts on her street in two years. She said she got the idea from someone using a similar tactic in Las Vegas.
The Facebook post was very popular. “I was just amazed at all the people who liked it and commented on it,’” Roekle said.
Julie, a Temescal Valley resident, took part by leaving a “present” outside from her German Shepherd, Carly, and, sure enough, someone took the bait.
“I didn’t in a million years think that it would ever be taken,” she told The Press Enterprise. “I was shocked.”
Sgt. Paul Mercado with Corona Police is not sure if the tactic works and he is concerned about retaliation.
“Some people might be vindictive,” Mercado said. “They don’t want to be outwitted by a resident, so they could come back and cause vandalism.”
How shitty that would be of them.
