A high speed pursuit through the Coachella Valley ended in La Quinta, where a suspected carjacker was shot and killed by police.

The pursuit began in Jurupa Valley when a man threatened two women with a gun and carjacked their vehicle, reports KESQ.

The suspect then drove east on the 10 and before exiting on Cook St and heading into Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and La Quinta – all while being pursued by police.

The driver reached speed of up to 85 miles per hour, according to the Desert Sun.  The pursuit continued even though the vehicle had flat tires.

The chase ended on Avenue 52 at Jefferson Street, just north of PGA West.

The man got out of the car about 7 pm, but refused to surrender, say police.  Members of SWAT fired bean bags, which had no effect on the man.  Police then used lethal force.

No civilians or officers were injured.
