A popular Holiday light display in Cathedral City will not be happening this year.
The Simmons Christmas Light Show made the announcement on Facebook, where they claim the City of Cathedral City, “continues to violate our Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights that are afforded to every U.S. citizen by the U.S. Constitution.”
The home, on Estio Road, has been a popular holiday attraction in the desert for years – with a huge synchronized light display and being conveniently located just a short distance away from Minerva Road, a.k.a. Candy Cane Lane.
The show was awarded Best Christmas Lights Display in America 2010 by The Early Show on CBS. And was featured on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight in 2013.
Owner of the home Michael Simmons told KMIR the show was closed due to neighbor complaints and requirements from the city.
“It sucks,” Simmons said. “I think they’ve been wanting to do this in past years they’ve just gotten a lot of slack from it. They’ve gotten a lot of heat from several neighbors of mine and they just want to do things on the up-and up apparently, but they’re still violating my rights.”
Simmons claims the city is demanding he play for traffic enforcement and trash pickup and get a special permit.
