A man pleaded guilty on Thursday to felony assault after he killed a who killed a fellow inmate at a Banning jail in a dispute over soup.
On January 21, Damien Arthur Miranda, 21, and Pedro Sepulveda, 27, got into a fight in a day room, an unsupervised area where inmates watch TV, make calls, and socialize, according to the Press Enterprise.
A fight broke out over soup and when deputies arrived, they found Sepulveda unconscious. He never came out of his coma and was pronounced dead four days later.
Thursday, Miranda was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison — eight years for the assault, one year for a probation violation, and eight months for a second probation violation.
Sepulveda’s family members say that Miranda should have faced tougher charges.
“We’re so angry,” Juan Sepulveda, a brother, said in a phone interview with the Press Enterprise. “We don’t agree with this.”
