A local man spent a cool fifty grand to name a baby giraffe Harold.
Harold Matzner coughed up the coin – which will go to the Living Desert – for the naming rights of the giraffe, according to a press release issued by zoo on Wednesday, which also happened to be World Giraffe Day. The giraffe had been without a name since being born to mother, Tuli, and father, Hesabu in April.
Yes. Tuli and Hesabu now have a son named…Harold.
“We are so grateful for the generosity of Harold Matzner and his love for The Living Desert,” said Jan Hawkins, Director of Development at The Living Desert. “By sharing his name with the baby giraffe, Harold is also sharing his commitment to the future of desert wildlife here in the Coachella Valley and around the world.”
And while $50,000 might sound like a lot of money, Matzner gave Ginny Foat three times that amount in her campaign for Palm Springs Mayor in 2015. Foat came up short in that campaign – and who knows, perhaps if she had won, Palm Springs would now officially be known as Harold Springs.
