It’s almost election day and that means Palm Desert residents will go to the polls to choose which candidates they feel will fix El Paseo, actually understand public transit, not run what sure look like racist ads, and maybe not pay disgraced City Managers accused of showing naked photos of coworkers around the office $300,000 in tax dollars. Voters can choose from a slate of candidates this year, including one with a pretty amazing campaign sign and another, Kenneth Doran, who would present some interesting challenges for the city should he win.

One additional warning sign for us about Doran: He is the subject of a workplace violence restraining order — granted by the Riverside County Superior Court in 2016 and effective until Nov. 1, 2019 — requiring that he stay at least 100 yards away from Palm Desert City Hall. The order was issued on behalf of the city and lists members of the City Clerk’s office as protected persons and an addendum lists “all City of Palm Desert employees” as protected persons.
While there likely could be workarounds to this order to stay away from City Hall if Doran were elected, the fact that he is subject to such an order is troubling.
Seeing as how elections come down to money, the incumbents have all of it, so it’s not likely Doran would or even should win. Plus, how would it even work if he did? Would he stand 100 yards away from City Hall and just yell his vote in?
Palm Desert is the weirdest.
