A customer who requested a Denver bakery decorate cakes with hateful and ignorant phrases is now claiming “religious discrimination” and that HIS civil rights were violated.
Marjorie Silva is the owner of Denver’s Azucar Bakery. Silva tells USA Today that she was approached in March of 2014 by Bill Jack, who requested several Bible-shaped cakes. Jack wanted the cakes to be decorated with phrases like “God hates gays” and “sinner”. One cake was to feature an image of two men holding hands with an “X” on top.
Silva did not feel right about the request. “We never refuse service,” Silva told My Fox Houston. “We did feel that it was not right for us to write hateful words or pictures against human beings.”
Silva did offer to bake the cakes and give Jack extra frosting so that he could decorate his hate-cakes any way that he wanted. He responded by filing a civil rights complaint with the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA)! (Take a moment and ponder the irony here)
Jack released a statement to KUSA stating, “I believe I was discriminated against by the bakery based on my creed. As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights division.”
Since the story broke, Silva says she has received lots of support and took to Facebook to say thank you:
“It’s unfair that he’s accusing me of discriminating when I think he was the one that is discriminating,” she told NBC9.
Both parties are awaiting DORA’s decision.
