Nearly 50% of Americans did not vote

The election is over and Donald Trump is, remarkably, the next President of the United States despite only getting votes from just over 1 in 4 Americans.

Some of the early data on eligible voters, via Mashable:

  • 46.6% didn’t vote
  • 25.6% voted for Hillary Clinton
  • 25.5% voted for Donald Trump
  • 1.7% voted for Gary Johnson

And while it may be that some were just lazy or put off by a negative campaign, there may be other reasons as well.

This election was the first since the Supreme Court ruled against the Voting Rights Act in 2013 leading some states to now require voters to present a photo ID and closing hundreds of polling sites.

No matter who wins or loses in an election, it just seems kind of important that the voice of all of the people is heard, not just 50% of them.
