Palm Springs is having an election in just a couple of weeks because Palm Springs, I guess, is just too cool (or they just don’t want anyone to show up at the polls) to have election in even numbered years like just about everyone else.
Maybe it’s for the best as this particular election features a bunch of meh candidates and Measure D which seeks a tax increase because those who run the city (and make a fortune doing so) are, clearly, terrible at doing their jobs. So, yeah, it’s just not the kind of things that will get you amped for an election.
The Desert Sun went out and endorsed Measure D, but even their endorsement seemed more of a “hold your nose” and vote for it kind of a thing.
City residents should hold their council and its well-paid advisers – such as City Manager David Ready, who has been handling city affairs since 2000 – to better decision-making down the road. City government cannot continue to hit up residents to cover mistakes of the past and leaders must not add to those problems. Smart spending must include revisiting the entire budget to weed out frivolous items in favor of those that truly benefit residents.
Now, don’t get me wrong. If you are live in Palm Springs, you should definitely vote – and no, I am not one of those assholes that says, “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” You can complain all you want. And you should complain. Perhaps even more than you alread are. Because, let’s face it, Palm Springs needs some big changes to the way they do business and, sadly, this election sure doesn’t look like it is going to do a damn thing to change that.
So is anyone actually excited about this thing? Well anyone other than the wealthy developers who keep getting richer off of dumb city decisions? Because it seems like the rest of us are all just trying to get this election over with.
