El Paseo, a stuffy Palm Desert street that only recently approved balloons, will play host to the event currently known as the Tour de Palm Springs beginning in 2018.
The event brings together cyclists to cruise around town and raise money for charity. It has been held in Palm Springs since it began in 1999, but looked to move as its organizer, Tim Esser, told KESQ that recently it had scheduling conflicts with Modernism Week.
Esser said he does not want to drop “Palm Springs” from the event name as it might mean a loss of participants.
“The name change will be discussed at a later time, however Tour de Palm Springs “in Palm Desert” will be high on list to be considered,” Esser told the TV station.
Palm Desert City Council members feel a little differently about the name, with the Desert Sun reporting that they are worried the city’s name will commonly be dropped when referring to the event.
Unless of course they name it “Tour de Palm Springs in Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley in Riverside County in California, USA” – because that is just catchy.
