Brandon Vandenburg, a former Vanderbilt football player and Coachella Valley native, was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Friday.

At the hearing, Vandenburg blamed alcohol and said he was ashamed of what happened, before asking the court for mercy.

During the trial, testimony showed that Vandenburg encouraged his teammates to rape an unconscious female student that he had been dating and gave them condoms in 2013.

He also took cellphone videos of the and emailed the footage to friends while the crime was going on.
