The mass shooting terror attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others has led to a huge amount of applications for concealed weapons permits. That, according to Sheriff Stan Sniff, who posted this Facebook update:

The post reads:
Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) Update: The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has issued nearly 1,700 CCWs to residents of Riverside County – some 3 times the record of anytime in our County’s history. In addition, there are currently over 400 completed applications being processed right now, with nearly 1,300 applications and interviews pending. At any given time since Dec 2nd, nearly 300 voicemails are being worked through by our CCW staff. There is currently a lot of interest in CCWs.
There is no other context given by the Sheriff, who appears to have just wanted us to know there are a lot of voicemails from random Riverside county residents looking to pack some heat as soon as possible. This comes on the heels of Californians buying up more guns in 2015 than any other year in history.
And with so many random people now carrying loaded weapons just about anywhere and everywhere, I am sure everyone feels much, much safer now.
