Police responded to an alert about a stolen vehicle from an automated license plate reader at 8 pm Wednesday, reports the Press Enterprise. Deputies found the car inside the parking structure. They monitored the vehicle and, a short time later, a man and a woman got into the car.
When deputies tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver of the car, 31-year-old Michael Russo of Riverside, put the car in reverse and struck and dragged a deputy.
Another deputy fired at the vehicle and struck Russo. The car continued at high speeds through the parking structure, smashing two other vehicles and a metal barrier before coming to a stop.
The passenger of the car, Ath Pen, 44, of Fresno, suffered “major injuries to her legs” but doctors said there was no evidence she was shot.
The deputy who was dragged suffered minor injuries, according to the LA Times.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division and homicide detail are investigating the shooting.
