Dear Clare,
I am a 20-year-old college student going to COD. Like most college kids, I live at home with my parents. Also, like most college kids, I dabble in the totally legal world of marijuana. I don’t smoke all the time, but enough to get caught with a small stash in my sock drawer. Now my parents are threatening to cut off my tuition money unless I pass random at home drug tests. Is this fair? Should I continue to live in this antiquated totalitarian household? Or should I move in with my boyfriend? He is also my dealer and he could use the extra income since everyone is buying it from shops now.

Mary Jane,
What your parents are asking is within reason given that they are paying for your college – their money, their rules. Moving in with your boyfriend because you’re mad at your parents is not the best plan, especially if he is dealing out of his place. Test your sales skills. Talk to your parents about a reasonable plan in which you commit not to smoking on the days you have classes but do plan to enjoy the weekends as you wish. You can offer to chip in on tuition to sweeten the deal if they don’t bite.

Clare,
I’ve never tried weed because I am paranoid I’ll get in trouble. Also, I don’t want to get paranoid. I’ve always been told I am missing out. I am curious. What would be the best (and safest) way to give it a go?
– First timer
First timer,
There are lots of different strains of weed so you can shop around and find something to fit the mood you’re hoping to strike. I wouldn’t plan too much. Perhaps a fun night in with some more experienced friends that you trust.

Dear Clare,
I just can’t seem to find inspiration to get my work done. I am distracted and just don’t really care. I have been at the same job for about 7 years and feel like I am on autopilot. It is very stable and pays well. I’m thinking about getting into the budding marijuana industry but worried about the uncertainty because of federal laws. How do I know if I am ready to get out of this joint and move on to something new?

Work for Weed,
If you’ve been feeling this way for a few months, it may be time. Before you ditch your pay, benefits and stability, do some research. There are lots of folks flocking to recreational pot shops for work opportunities. Do you have skills that would be useful to these businesses? Talk to a few storeowners and get their input.
