Can a theme park work in 120 degree heat? A group of developers in The Coachella Valley hope so.
A proposed “Return To Aztlan” theme park would be located by the 10 freeway near Fantasy Springs and Spotlight 29 Casinos. The development would include a 200-foot pyramid, a 10,000-person concert plaza, a movie theater, amusement rides, hotel, river walk, hotel, restaurants and stores.
The company behind the plan, Aztlán Development, would also like to build a film production facility.
According to a statement on their website, the project will bring many entertainment options and jobs to The Coachella Valley:
“Return to Aztlán will be the next generation of integrated trend-setting retail, innovative attractions, 5-D experiences, and experiential entertainment, creating a wholesome family destination to be enjoyed for generations to come,” said Mark Stuart, CEO. “It will be a unique, year-round feature set with destination retail, dining, cinema, world class entertainment, and lodging adventures anchored by an all-season theme park with a lot of water features. It is our plan to extend the normal season to 365 days a year, creating 1,000 direct and indirect jobs for the East Valley.””
City leaders have not formally discussed the plan, but will Thursday. If approved, construction could start as early as April 2016, with the first phase opening in 2018.
