A Desert Hot Springs High School student was taken into custody after school security officers say they found a loaded firearm in the student’s backpack, reports the Desert Sun.
The gun was found on Friday morning during a wellness check of a student who was suspected of being in possession of a vape pen.
A school district spokesperson said the student did not display the gun at any time.
“Police responded to the campus and apprehended the student and weapon without incident,” DHSHS Principal Caroline Cota wrote in an email to parents (via KESQ). ” We are grateful for the diligence of our staff and law enforcement partners in ensuring the safety of our students, which is our number one priority. Thank you for your understanding.”
