More than 80% of California is now in extreme drought and it looks like it is going to continue to get worse no matter how hard Lady Gaga works to end it. While the state looks for ways to get residents to ration water and local newspapers look to get free tours of bottled water companies, there has been one positive that has come out of the drought: the new industry of lawn painting.
KTTV Los Angeles profiled Kerri McCoy, who owns Lawn Paint Pros. She says demand is up for dying, or painting grass, and, it is a big drought-helper. With sanctions on water use becoming an issue, more and more homeowners have been utilizing her services.
We watched as she and a colleague worked. Like a hair stylist who prepares a dye for the hair, she prepares a green vegetable dye for the lawn by mixing a green solution with water. She tries to match the color to the best parts of the yard.
It is all the magic of a lush, green lawn – just without all of that water-using living grass. And, if you are thinking of getting into the lawn painting industry, know that your customers will be calling you back again and again.
McCoy says, now, there will be no need to water, mow the lawn or worry about the health of the lawn. She says “It doesn’t really die completely. It just goes a little bit dormant during the hot summer months.” In three months it’ll need another paint job. “Then when the winter-time comes, when we start getting the rain, hopefully, it’ll start to turn green again.”
And if it doesn’t, well I am sure Kerri will be more than happy to slap another coat of paint on.
So yes, Mother Nature has brought an awful drought to California and we have fought her off by painting our dead grass green every couple of months. California is a weird, weird place.
