A lawsuit has been filed by the families of two men who were among the 13 people killed in a bus crash on the 10 freeway near Palm Springs.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed Thursday in a Los Angeles court by the families of Gustavo Garcia and Tony Mai, reports the Press Enterprise. The families are suing the bus company, USA Holiday, and the estate of bus company owner and driver Teodulo Elias Vides.

The daughters of Vides told ABC 7 that he cared greatly for the passengers on his bus.

“This community out here in Koreatown, and all his passengers, were his extended family,” Julie Vides said.

The bus, which was returning from a trip to Red Earth Casino, was traveling at “freeway speeds,” according to the CHP, when it slammed into a semitrailer moving at 5 mph because of utility work.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Tuesday that some tires on the bus were overly worn, putting the vehicle out of compliance with federal regulations.
