Huge Drug Tunnel Found Linking Tijuana and San Diego

Drug Tunnel SD Tijuana

Authorities announced the discovery of a massive drug tunnel linking The U.S. and Mexico on Thursday. The tunnel housed a rail car system and was over eight-and-a-half football fields long.

12 tons of marijuana were seized in the bust on Wednesday and 22 people were arrested.

The passage was reportedly 9 feet deep and about 2,600 feet long — with about three-quarters of the tunnel being in Tijuana and the rest in San Diego. The tunnel was reinforced with metal beams and was well lit. It was lit, ventilated and built with metal beams to prevent collapse.

“We see a super tunnel open for business once every year or so,” U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy told San Diego 6. “Just when they think they’re ready to move, we put it out of business. We continue to make good on our promise to relentlessly pursue and shut down any tunnel as soon as it opens.”
