The race for Irvine’s city council took an odd twist this week as one of the candidates was caught on camera leaving his elderly disabled mom in Laguna Beach to beg for money on the sidewalk.

Dave Chey has been driving his 86-year-old mother to the beach community several nights a week to panhandle, according to CBS LA. Heidi Miller, who runs a business in Laguna Beach, told the TV station that she has seen Chey drop his mom off in a new car and even questioned if the money she gets is used to fund his campaign.

“City council you need to be compassionate, understanding, follow the laws. All those types of things,” Miller told the TV station. “And you look at this scenario going on for 10, 12 years. Is he doing that? I don’t think so.”

Chey has been dropping off his mother in Laguna Beach and Irvine to beg for money for more than 10 years, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Chey declined to be interviewed. it’s not his first time running for office – as he ran unsuccessfully for Irvine mayor in 2016.

Laguna Beach Police say that nothing he or is mother is doing is illegal.
