Gilmore girls fans rejoice! The wonderful world of Amy Sherman-Palladino is back! “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is the latest and greatest from the top-hat-wearing creator of “Gilmore girls” and lesser known “Bunheads” and you can watch it on Amazon this weekend for free!

Set in the late 1950s the show follows Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan (you’d recognize her as Rachel from House of Cards) a young Jewish-American wife, mother, and committer of indecent exposure (aren’t we all?) Things are seemingly stellar for her, she’s married, has two kiddos, and a picture-perfect apartment. Then things start to unravel.

The world of “Gilmore girls” was always so clean and perfect. You’d never see a barking dog or a police officer in Stars Hollow. Absolute blasphemy! I mean, the town had a collective  aneurysm when Jess showed up. That was the major scandal in the series. A leather jacket wearing teenager. “Maisel” differs drastically, showing that Sherman-Palladino had so much more up her sleeve in regards to writing. The world she created is dirty, there’s drama, it hits on taboo topics. It’s edgy, there’s bad language (fuck yeah!) and things aren’t at all perfect. You won’t find a white gazebo in this show.

Midge is strong, she’s not afraid to speak her mind, yet she has some inner demons she wrestles with. She’s brazen and has common sense, seeing that the things around her aren’t fair or just. She lives in a world where a woman could be arrested just for using inappropriate language. If that was the fucking case now, I would have been in a goddamn jail cell ages ago. Shit, man. A world where, as a woman, your duty (haha “doody”)  was to pop out babies and stay home. There’s a scene in the first episode where Midge and her husband Joel go to sleep. As soon as he nods off she heads to the bathroom to put on curlers, moisturize, and then she gets back into bed. She wakes up well before he does the next morning, fixes her hair, puts on makeup, and then gets back into bed before he wakes up. He wakes up to a perfectly flawless Midge, unaware of all the work that went into it. Um, no thanks.

That is not the world I live in. I go to bed with my hair wet and wake up looking like  Steve-from-Stranger-Things. If I straighten my hair someone will always ask, “did you get a haircut?” Nope, just brushed it. Don’t get me wrong, I like getting dolled up, and can clean up quite nicely when I do, but there’s no way I could do that 24/7.

Aside from a great story, the show is just amazing to look at. The fashion, the sets, the wallpaper, every little detail. The dynamic characters are the driving force behind “Maisel”. Exceptional acting all around. I won’t say too much about the cast, only because I was pleasantly surprised when I saw who all was in it, so enjoy that. I lied, Alex Borstein is in the show and she’s AMAZING! Fun fact for all you “Gilmore” fans, Alex Borstein (who voices Lois on Family Guy) was married to Jackson Douglas (Jackson from “Gilmore girls”) Borstein was also on the show a few times as Drella (the harp player) and Miss Celine. She had auditioned to play Sookie, but was passed over for Melissa McCarthy. All I know is that her character in “Maisel” is my favorite. If anything, just watch it for her.

The music is fantastic, too!

If you don’t believe a single word I’ve said A) fuck you, you’re ridiculous B) consider the fact that “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” just took home two Golden Globes this past weekend. Rachel Brosnahan won for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series and the show, as a whole, won for Best Musical or Comedy TV Series.

So flossy.

Definitely worth a watch, and this weekend you can stream The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Video, FOR FREE, through Monday at 11:59pm. So get on it! I’m even including a link for the lazy. Click me! Click me!
