A man police say attacked another man with a machete in La Quinta in 2015 was in custody Tuesday.

Christopher Yslas, 32, was booked in Riverside and is expected to appear in court on Thursday. He is accused of swinging the blade at a man on Feb. 12, 2015, according to the Desert Sun.

The victim intervened during an argument between Yslas and his girlfriend that allegedly involved pushing. The victim intervened by punching Yslas, who then allegedly pulled out a machete and swung it at the man, who was able to block the blow with his arm – leaving him with a severed artery and damage to the bone on his forearm.

Yslas then fled from the scene.

Two weeks after the incident, police interviewed Yslas who saif he struck the man in self-defense after the man had punched his head. Yslas told investigators that he apologized when he saw the man was bleeding before leaving the scene and tossing the machete in a dumpster.

Yslas was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in June 2016.
