A man who police say was armed and assaulting a woman was shot and killed by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy Sunday morning.
Police were called with reports of an assault to an open field north of Dillon Road, between Johnson and Corkill roads at about 9:20 am, reports the Desert Sun. A witness told the newspaper they saw a man with a knife dragging a woman through a field.

A deputy arrived and requested backup for an armed suspect. The deputy then approached the suspect, who the deputy said was armed with a knife. The suspect was ordered to put down the knife and refused, continuing to assault the woman, according to a news release. The deputy then shot the suspect.
Deputy Armando Munoz told KMIR that the man, “was allegedly armed and was assaulting a woman when deputies arrived at the scene, Deputies attempted to contact the male suspect and during that time an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died. His name has not been released.
The deputy was placed on administrative leave.
