Missing Joshua Tree hikers deaths were a murder-suicide, say investigators

Two hikers that went missing in Joshua Tree National Park died in a murder-suicide.

Rachel Nguyen and Joseph Orbeso were found embracing each other on Sunday. Friday investigators said the evidence points to a murder-suicide, reports the Hi-Desert Star.

“Based on evidence located at the scene, detectives believe Orbeso shot Nguyen, then shot himself. The investigation into Orbeso’s actions remain under investigation.” the investigators said.

A search for the couple began after they failed to check into the Airbnb rental in July.  The couple’s car was found near the Maze Loop Trail.

Hundreds of searches were conducted in the area with search teams often enduring scorching summer temperatures and families of the two hikers offered a $10,000 reward in August.
