No, you don’t need to send a prepaid gift card to some rando because you skipped jury duty

There’s a new scam happening in the Inland Empire and you might want to make sure that those in your circle who are easily susceptible to these types of things know that if someone calls and tells them they will be arrested for missing jury duty unless they send in a gift card, that person is not, in fact, a county official, and they are being targeted by a con artist.

Z107.7 details how the call typically goes down with a caller saying you can avoid arrest for missing jury duty by paying a dine with a prepaid debit or gift card. This, of course, is not at all how things work.

The caller may also target personal information like a social security number, birthday, and other information which you shouldn’t give out to a rando on the phone.  Ever.

Court officers never ask for personal information over the phone and any correspondence with potential jurors is done by mail so, should one of these calls come your way, hang up.
