Sooooo maybe you should stop tagging your Instagram and Facebook posts.
Why? Well, meet 44-year-old Arturo Galvan of Menifee. Gavlan, according to police, would break into people’s houses to steal their underwear (sometimes while they slept!) and he found these homes by using the GPS data embedded in Facebook and Instagram photos people posted online.
Via The LA Times:
Investigators say Galvan identified his victims by hanging out in public gathering places in Fullerton and Orange and searching for social media posts where people “checked in” or otherwise provided clues to their location, according to Fullerton Police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel.
Galvan then allegedly searched through his victim’s posted photos, combed through GPS data attached to the digital images and mapped them to find out where they lived, Hamel said.
Along with women’s bras and underwear, Galvan occasionally stole undergarments from male roommates, Hamel said.
He also didn’t discriminate between stealing clean clothes from a drawer or soiled garments in a laundry basket, according to police.
Galvan also is accused of stealing other items like laptops and tablets from 24 victims in Fullerton and near Chapman University in Orange, reports OC Register.
Galvan, who is married with 3 daughters, was discovered this weekend in Fullerton, when a caller reported a man prowling through the neighborhood. After a 3-hour search, police found and arrested Galvan. They found the electronics in his house and the stolen undergarments in his garage.
He was booked on suspicion of burglary, receiving stolen property, peeping and prowling and resisting arrest. He has since been released on $200,000 bail – so maybe check your privacy settings.
