A call came into 9-1-1 dispatchers about 9:45 pm about a possible robbery, reports the Desert Sun.
At some point, it was determined the incident was not an armed robbery but, rather, an officer-involved shooting. The situation, however, did not involve Indio police, Guitron said.
Apparently, special agents from the Santa Ana field office of the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with other law enforcement agencies, were part of an ongoing investigation that led them to the Coachella Valley, specifically to the city of Indio, Guitron said.
The group was “conducting surveillance” of members of a “robbery crew,” Guitron said, when that “crew” started to commit a robbery at the hotel.
Shots were fired and one suspect was struck by gunfire. They were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Best Western guests are being let into their hotel rooms as OIS investigation continues near the front entrance. No officers are injured. Suspects condition is unknown.
