Officials testing the knife found on the property of O.J. Simpson should be done within a couple of weeks.  Early analysis reportedly shows that the knife is probably not connected to the murders.

LAPD Capt. William Hayes, who oversees the Robbery Homicide Division, told the LA Times that the knife is at the LAPD forensic lab for forensic testing and he would expect that work to take one to two weeks. But, as the newspaper notes, early indications are that the knife is not connected to the murders:

Sources familiar with the case have told The Times a preliminary review suggested that the weapon appeared to be unconnected to the brutal 1994 slayings of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman.

It remains to be seen whether DNA of any kind will be found on the knife given how long it has been since it was reportedly unearthed at the Simpson estate.

The knife was reportedly found by a construction worker years ago. The worker handed over the knife to an off-duty cop, George Maycott, who says he called the LAPD about the find.  When they showed no interest, he put the knife in his toolbox for over 10 years.

While O.J. has told friends he is ‘a little worried’ about the knife, Mark Fuhrman, the former LAPD officer involved in the Simpson case, said he thinks it should be easy for investigators to determine if this knife is indeed the murder weapon.

“I kind of wonder why the Los Angeles Police Department felt compelled to do a press conference on an item of possible evidence that they could quite easily eliminate just by viewing the knife,” he told Fox News.  “It can only be a certain width, length and thickness, or it simply isn’t the weapon.”
