The Palm Desert City Council – well, some of them, anyway – voted in favor of allowing six marijuana dispensaries within the city limits on Thursday night, reports The Desert Sun.
Only one shop will be allowed on El Paseo, the city’s high-end shopping district often called “the Rodeo Drive of the desert,” and it can only be located east of Larkspur Lane.
The City Council approved the ordinance 3-2 with Mayor Jan Harnik and Councilwoman Gina Nestande recusing themselves, both for potential personal business conflicts.
Okay, first, no one calls it “the Rodeo Drive of the desert.” No one. Second, this decision made your mom pretty angry.

The dispensaries will only be allowed in industrial areas – with only one near El Paseo, which the city hopes will be super fancy.
While most cities conduct a lottery to determine who will be permitted to sell marijuana within the city, Palm Desert is attempting to institute a “merit based” system to select the six dispensaries because, clearly, Palm Desert hates capitalism, drive thrus, food trucks the people who live in the city.
