Monday, members of the Palm Springs Police Department showed their support for 8-year-old Vanessa Vega, daughter of Officer Jose “Gil” Vega, by giving her an escort as she returned for her first day back at Rio Vista Elementary School.

Officer Vega died on Oct. 8, after serving for over 30 years on the force. He left behind 8 children, including his youngest, Vanessa.

Palm Springs Police Sgt. William Hutchinson told the Desert Sun that officers wanted Vanessa to know they will always support her.
“It is a very tragic time for her. We can’t walk away. She has a whole new family to rely on.”
