Congressman Raul Ruiz took time Monday to head to Joshua Tree National Park – where he volunteered to clean up trash since that’s the only way to keep the park clean during what seems like it will be a never-ending Trump Shutdown.

“This administration and this government is not for the people, and we need to open the government,” Congressman Ruiz told KMIR’s Lauren Day. Ruiz called the shutdown a “hostage situation” where individuals are being “used as pawns.”

Last week, the Mojave Desert Land Trust called for a closure of the park “to prevent irreparable damage to the iconic Joshua trees the Park was named for as well as other Park resources.”
