The San Diego Regional Airport Authority keeps a 52 point checklist on hand for cab drivers. When a driver enters the airport, inspectors will run through the list and determine if the driver and car have including:

  • proof of insurance,
  • functioning windshield wipers
  • proper tread on the tires
  • body odor!

Yup, in San Diego if a cabbie smells bad, they are told to clean up and come back later.

As ABC 10 reports, cabbies say the policy leads to prejudice and discrimination.  Leaders of the United Taxi Workers of San Diego union say the body odor item perpetuates a stereotype that predominantly foreign-born taxi drivers smell bad. Many cab drivers in San Diego are from East Africa.
