Cheers to scientists!
A new study suggests that an ingredient in hops is believed to slow the progression of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia.
The chemical, called xanthohumol or Xn, could help protect brain cells from oxidative damage associated with dementia according to research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The study found that people who drink beer regularly might be better able to ward off the progression of neurological diseases.
Now, earlier studies suggested the opposite showing that binge drinking is associated with an increased risk of dementia and having a beer belly in middle age boosted one’s risk of Alzheimer’s later life by 300% – but you probably didn’t read past the first two paragraphs…so yay beer!
