Desert X 2019 runs from Palm Springs to the Salton Sea (with many spots in the Coachella Valley in between) from February 9 through April 21. Below is info for Lover’s Rainbow and you can catch all the info you need for every Desert X installation in our complete guide here.
What: Lover’s Rainbow
Artist: Pia Camil
Where: 69930 Highway 111, Rancho Mirage – across from the Atrium
Note: if you are looking to avoid Desert X “spoilers” stop reading here. If not, carry on.
The Lowdown: This installation is on the south side of Highway 111 next to Rancho Mirage City Hall and across from the Atrium. You can pull into a dirt parking lot from a small access road off of Highway 111, park across the street at the Atrium, or you can park at City Hall and walk over, it’s up to you.
Also note: the weird, ugly rabbits on the south side of the street are not part of Desert X.
The piece, which is visible from Highway 111, is a rainbow – with no actual rain required. The piece is made of painted rebar.
Also of note, this piece sits at the base of a decent hike, which gives you views of Rancho Mirage and the Ritz Carlton resort.
There is an exact replica of this installation installed in Ensenda, Mexico here – and you should make plans to take a drive south to check it out and be sure to grab me some ceviche while you’re there.
