The Ironman triathlon is coming back to La Quinta (so plan on staying at home that day)

There really was never a doubt that, despite the clusterfuck that was the first round of it, the Ironman triathlon would return to La Quinta and, well,  now it’s official.

Via the Desert Sun:

“I believe we owe it to our community to make this decision,” said Mayor Linda Evans. “The revenue is outstanding and will only grow from here.”

The council’s unanimous decision followed a near two-hour discussion and presentation of three different route options for the 56-mile cycling portion of the 70.3-mile triathlon. The council chose the option that takes cyclists from Avenue 52 east on Jefferson to Miles Avenue, where they will cross Washington into the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the 13.1-mile running portion of the race.

That option “minimizes the zigzags and just gets them there,” Evans said.

Will a new route do the trick?  Who knows?  But,  La Quinta residents should go ahead and plan on staying home or getting out of town on December 8 because, like all Coachella Valley cities, the tourists must always come before locals in the desert.
