An accident on The I-10 Tuesday that was caused by a lady eating a burrito. This story has raised awareness for distracted driving.

And while eating while driving is not illegal, it can be considered so if a driver is deemed to be distracted.

Hagerty Classic Insurance looked into what food items were most responsible for insurance claims.  They found it was not necessarily the eating that made things dangerous, but more the spilling of the food.  These were the top 10 food offenders in the car:

  1. Coffee: Everyone has spilled coffee in their car.  Coffee is the devil.
  2. Hot soup: Some choose to sip it like coffee out of a thermos while driving.  At some point it will spill and that is when things go bad
  3. Tacos: too easy for everything to fall out of the tortilla
  4. Chili: Hold up.  Who is eating chili driving a the car?  Think of not just the hazard of driving, but the hazard of the air for the people sitting behind you.
  5. Hamburgers: Ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc – way too many ingredients to spill on you and your ride.
  6. Barbecued food: Sensing a theme here?  The sauce is messy and that is bad.
  7. Fried chicken: Greasy food equals greasy hands equals danger.
  8. Jelly or cream-filled donuts: Delicious, yes.  But that ooze is so unpredictable.
  9. Soft drinks: Any sudden movements could have that can or cup of soda fizzing up big time.
  10. Chocolate: Kind of like greasy foods as it sticks to you easily.  Then, when you try to clean it off, you stop paying attention to the road.
