The section of the highway, south of Banning and just north of Lake Fulmore, was estimated to be about 40 feet across at first, and has continued to grow, according to the CHP.
Highway 243 is closed near Banning High School. Additionally, Highway 74 is closed in two spots – at Borco Street in East Hemet and another closure on Highway 74 is at Mountain Center, leaving Idyllwild as basically an island, for now.
