A 55-year-old Twentynine Palms man was arrested Wednesday morning after a high speed pursuit that police say reached speeds over 120 miles per hour.

When an officer saw a Jeep Cherokee driving 80 miles per hour Lear Avenue, he attempted to pull over the driver, Mitchell Chris Grier, reports Z107.7.

Grier did not stop, instead accelerating to close to 100 mph. Police say he then began to hard brake in an attempt to cause the pursuing officer to crash.

The chase made its way to Highway 62, with Grier speeding up to 120 miles per hour while heading eastbound. This is when the CHP determined, in the interest of public safety, to end their pursuit.

Grier then attempted a left turn at high speeds on Sunrise Road – which resulted in the Jeep driving into the desert and becoming disabled. Grier then fled on foot but was apprehended at gunpoint by police a short time later.

Grier was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon on a Peace Officer, felony evading, and resisting arrest.
