So you’ve decided to use some of that extra time you have on your hands to make some bonus cash driving for Uber, Lyft or both and now you are left asking the question: but how tho? No sweat, applying for either program is easy and, before you know it, you’ll be making extra money driving people to events like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival, the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament, and more.
Being a ride-share driver means you can work when you want. Have some extra time on the weekend, that’s fine. Prefer to be available more than that, that’s fine too. You make your own hours with each company.
Of course, there are some requirements. Here is a breakdown of each service:
Uber / Uber Eats Driver Partner Requirements
- 21 years old or older
- At least one year of driving experience (or three years if you’re under 23)
- Valid U.S. driver’s license
- Pass a criminal background check
Lyft Driver Requirements
- 21 years old or older
- At least one year of driving experience
- U.S. driver’s license
- Pass free DMV and background checks
- Proof of insurance
- Use an iPhone or Android smartphone
Uber Vehicle Requirements
- 2002 or newer
- Four doors
- Room for four passengers, not including the driver
- Good condition
- Proof of registration
- Proof of insurance
- No commercial branding on the car
Lyft Vehicle Requirements
- 2006 or newer (newer in some states)
- Four doors
- Five to eight seats, including the driver’s
- Pass a safety inspection
- Current registration
- Proof of insurance
Applying is easy. Both companies allow you to apply online. Just complete the application and allow the companies to check your driving and criminal history. Once you pass, you are good to go.
