A long time ago, in multiple valley locations not-too-far-away, Rita’s Italian Ice took refuge in the desert. I know because I had a hardcore addiction to the place and was probably the only person keeping them in business. Cherry italian ice and custard were my absolute downfall. Then every valley location shut down and that sucked.
I cried at least once because of it. *And not like in an overly dramatic way, but because I was legitimately sad about it. I’m telling you, I could justify any reason to get a Rita’s fix. It’s Wednesday! I filled my car up with gas ALL THE WAY! It’s Thursday! It has fruit in it, therefore it’s basically a health food!
I’m not here to talk about Rita though. She is dead to me. I had lost all hope for Italian ice in the desert. Until the other day when a buddy and I were walking down Palm Canyon Drive. Do my eyes deceive me!?
Fret no more, Italian ice lovers, Vinny’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard is here to save the dang day!
We walked in and were greeted by the friendly owner, always a good thing!
Vinny’s boasts a wide range of flavors and even has frozen treats for your pups. (All proceeds from the pup treats go to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, so how cool is that!?)
I decided on cherry Italian ice and vanilla custard and was happy with my choice. Da ice was perfect and not too overly sweet, custard was custardy in all the right ways. Partner in Crime ordered Nightmare Before Christmas Italian ice and vanilla custard. Which, I can say, Nightmare Before Christmas had just the right amount of nightmares in it. Perfectly balanced with the other flavors (which I forgot).
The place is great and I would recommend full heartedly. The owner was friendly and welcoming. There’s a flavor for everyone, and right now he has the holiday flavors out!!
There are 22 flavors in total, and if you have food allergies, there isn’t a more perfect spot to check out! Aside from a couple flavors (egg nog and chocolate chip cookie dough) Vinny’s Italian ice is 100% vegan, 100% dairy free, and 100% gluten free! Also, if you have your fur baby with you, they have a whole set up outside to keep your pal hydrated and snack’d. Win-win for everyone!
Allergen friendly desserts, dog lovers, awesome owner, what more could you ask for in a local business? Prices were decent, for a scoop of Italian ice and custard we paid $5.50 each.
More than worth it to support a new local business!
